Willow Basketry 201 – Rope Coil Technique

Description

In this one day class we will be making small rope coil baskets. Through making these baskets we will learn about 3×3 slath bases, twining, rope coil weaving technique, and 3 behind one OR 4 behind 2 borders. Participants will also be learning about material selection, and proper hand positioning while weaving. This class is open to adult weavers with previous applicable experience weaving baskets. In this class we will be using cultivated basketry willows grown in Ontario by Lakeshore Willows, however the techniques can also be used with wild willow, dogwood, and other found woody materials that have the same long, flexible characteristics.

DISCLAIMER: Weaving willow is essentially braiding with wood. Willow is a tough material, and although basketry can be a very peaceful and meditative practice, it takes some time to learn. Please consider how days of repetitive twisting of your wrists, and pointed pressure with your fingers will leave you feeling at the end of each day. If you have difficulty working with your hands for long periods of time, this class may not be right for you.

Johnny Suderman

Johnny is a willow grower, basketmaker and hand-craft enthusiast. He can often be found tending willow coppice, gathering sticks, foraging for weaving materials, making baskets, and generally being a the keenest basketry sponge. Since 2018, he has been exploring this heritage craft and spreading his love for basketry. Johnny has been tending willow coppice since 2022, and became the owner and operator of Lakeshore Willows in 2023. Descendant of German Mennonite and English ancestors, he currently resides with his partner Michiko in Glen Morris, Ontario.
