workshop description

This workshop will be split into four 3 hour chunks:

Part 1) Discussing the vital force and nutrition / food & lifestyle alterations. as the primary and most effective healing modality . After a Short break we will resume a discussion giving a tour of a few select eastern modalities Chiefly, Ayurveda, Islamic & Unani principals and how to integrate them in a community setting. Discussion on humoral theory and temperaments will be done 

Part 2) Herb Walk – we will spend some time walking identifying plants that are utilized as food and medicine. Where available I will dig up and demonstrate how to harvest various parts sustainably and safely. 

Part 3) The world of Alchemy – taking an opportunity to introduce the concepts of alchemy  & then after a short break we can resume our discussion and then open the floor for an integrated discussion between us on what we have learned thus far – demos will happen as time permits.

Part 4)  Discovering the hidden apothecary – we will spend the last section talking about how to really control the medicinal elements in your kitchen. All common and some rarer spices will be discussed from a culinary and medicinal standpoint. How to use them, combine them, best extraction methods and more will be discussed.  I will then demonstrate a few dry roast blends , and then we will end the class with you folks having a lovely taste of an aromatic culinary creation

Talal Al Hamad

Talal Al-Hamad is a man of many talents. He is an herbalist with a diverse background in many natural healing modalities. He utilizes a unique east meets west approach to imbalances and disease, with great efficacy. He has been a student of various holistic modalities including: Traditional Western Herbalism, Islamic & Unani medicine, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Alchemy/Spagyrics, Flower essences, Nutrition and more. Talal is a Registered Medical Herbalist and Governing Council member of the American Herbalist Guild,and is also the founder of herbalists without borders South East Ontario. In addition to teaching students around the world, he is also a freelance contributor to the Herbal Academy and regularly teaches at herbal conferences in North America. Talal is well known for popularizing Arabic, Islamic & Unani medicine in the West. Herbalist by day and jazz guitarist / fanatical foodie by night, Talal has an innate passion for healing and has devoted his life to developing his treatment protocols and furthering his knowledge of medicinal herbs. Having conquered his own health challenges with his knowledge, it is easy to see how his passion for healing others is truly sincere
