Buckskin Deer Tanning Workshop

October 22 @ 9:00 am October 24 @ 12:00 pm

Come explore the ancient craft of hide tanning with Abby. In this weekend intensive workshop you will be guided through the process of brain tanning a deer skin into buckskin. While honouring these majestic forest dwelling creatures we will go beyond the skin to explain and demonstrate what other gifts they offer. Through this hands on, labour intensive process we are given an amazing opportunity to connect with ourselves, each other and the spirit of the deer. We will make some of our own tools and explore the nature of the tools provided here as well. Saturday evening we will have a sauna to relax the muscles and dance under the stars!   The workshop will begin on Saturday morning @9:00 am. We will move through part of the process soaking overnight and continuing our process on Sunday morning @ 9:00am, to arrive at stretched dry hide by the evening. (possible smoking) Monday morning we will hopefully smoke the hides weather depending.

The tanning process has many forms and we ask that we give ourselves time to move through it with ease in this short 3 days it is very much an intensive. ( We look forward to doing a hide camp in the future as a week long process with multiple skins. Sheep, goat, bear, deer, small rodents etc…)   Breakfast, light lunch & Dinner are a group process/provided please bring anything you wish to contribute. This is a campout style event so bring your camping gear. If accommadations are needed please get in touch. You are also welcome to bring a trailer but there are no plug ins.

Things to bring: clothing that is ok to get dirty, tent (if camping) blankets for sleeping, pillow, towel for sauna, water bottle, & willingness to be a bit sore ( it is a physically intensive process)

If cost is a barrior please get in touch and we will see what we can do.  We look forward to seeing you all on the land!~

This weekend workshop is now full. If you are interested in learning how to process deer skins hunting season is on and will be doing lots of processing so please get in touch and maybe we can do a one on one lesson. 🙂
